How do I avoid a heating oil spill?

A heating oil spill can cost you over £10,000, plus it can damage both your property and the environment! Our BoilerJuice team have written a quick guide to making sure you can avoid the stress and bills that come with a heating oil spill. How can you avoid a heating oil spill?

1. Look for any cracks or splits in your heating oil tank. Temperature changes can increase the chance of splits and cracks in your tank. Unfortunately, if your tank has cracks or has split, it is unable to be repaired, which means a new heating oil tank will needed.
2. Make sure your heating oil tank is properly supported. Your tank’s support must be appropriate for the weight of your tank. The material must also be non-combustible such as concrete, paving stones or stonework.
3. If you smell oil around your heating oil tank, the best thing to do is to ring a qualified technician. The technician will check your tank for any leaks. This will help reduce the risk of a large heating oil spillage.
4. Get a tank inspection every year. Even if you don’t smell oil or see any signs of damage to your tank it is best to get an inspection every year. This will dramatically decrease the chance of having an oil leak.
5. Get a bund tank alarm. A bund tank alarm will notify you if there is a leak or if someone has stolen your oil. If there is a detected leak or theft, the alarm will be activated to alert you. How can I keep my heating oil tank in good condition 1. Add additives to your oil Additives provide a cleaner burn for your heating oil which means fewer containments that can clog up your filter. Having cleaner heating oil makes your heating system more efficient and this can reduce maintenance costs for your tank in the long run. 2. Remove water from your tank Removing water from your tank can help keep your tank in good condition. Water can cause rust your tank which can damage it. Not only can water damage your tank, but it can also damage your boiler if it passes through your heating system. A water removal kit is a great way to remove water and increase your tank’s life span. 3. Get your tank regularly serviced It’s recommended that heating oil tanks should have a yearly service by a trained technician. This will make sure that your tank is safe for a top-up.
